Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy, often simply referred to as a "root canal," is the most effective way to salvage a tooth that has become infected. This specialized dental procedure is designed to address the root cause of the infection, alleviate the associated toothache, and safeguard the tooth's long-term health. Tooth infections typically arise from two main causes: either as a result of oral trauma that damages the tooth or due to advanced decay that erodes the outer layers, leading to a significant cavity. The process of root canal therapy involves creating an access point in the infected tooth and then using specialized instruments to thoroughly clean and remove the infection from the interior. When performed correctly, a root canal procedure can fully restore the tooth's functionality and protect it for a duration of 10 years or more, with many instances lasting a lifetime.

Root Canal Retreatment

Why is Root Canal Retreatment Necessary? At RDS, we employ advanced CBCT imaging to minimize the risk of complications during your initial root canal therapy, ensuring the best chance of completely eradicating the infection. However, there are situations where a previously treated tooth can encounter issues after a few years. These issues may include new decay, a loose, fractured, or damaged filling or crown, or a tooth fracture that leads to both damage and new decay. In such cases, root canal retreatment becomes necessary to rescue and preserve the affected tooth. Is Endodontic Retreatment Painful? No, it is not. Similar to your initial root canal treatment, your mouth will be completely numbed during the process, and at RDS, we also offer sedation options.

Emergency Endodontics

What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency? A dental emergency encompasses any situation involving tooth injuries, damage, or infections that demand immediate attention due to factors like intense pain, uncontrollable bleeding, or substantial swelling. These issues may arise from various causes, including untreated dental decay, gum disease, dental trauma, or teeth fractures resulting from excessive grinding. Did you know that a toothache can also fall under the category of a dental emergency? This is because tooth pain serves as an indicator that something is amiss with the tooth, whether it has suffered harm from an injury or has been affected by decay. A healthy tooth typically doesn't cause pain or discomfort. Thus, experiencing significant pain signals the need for prompt examination and treatment. Intense tooth pain could be a sign of damaged pulp or an infection. If left unaddressed, such an infection can potentially spread to neighboring teeth or even throughout the body, and in severe cases, it may lead to sepsis. The following scenarios are all considered dental emergencies:

  • Severe tooth pain

  • Uncontrolled bleeding

  • Knocked out tooth

  • Chipped

  • Cracked

  • Loose teeth

  • Swollen & abscessed gums

  • Soft tissue trauma

  • Jaw pain

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically begin to emerge during the late teens or early twenties, although some individuals may not see them until closer to their thirties. Most adults do not have enough space in their mouths to accommodate this extra set of molars. As a result, dentists and oral surgeons often recommend extracting these wisdom teeth as soon as possible. At Redlands Dental Specialty, we specialize in performing wisdom tooth removal for individuals of all ages. Dr. Moretta, a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with extensive experience in managing third molar cases, is dedicated to improving patients' oral health. We offer a range of anesthesia and sedation options to ensure your comfort during the surgical procedure. If you or your child requires wisdom teeth removal, don't hesitate to reach out to us in Redlands, CA, to schedule a consultation. Why is it Important to Remove Wisdom Teeth? When there isn't sufficient space in the mouth for wisdom teeth, they can lead to various health complications as they attempt to fit into the dental arch. Wisdom teeth can exert pressure on neighboring teeth, potentially causing misalignment or bite issues. Additionally, overcrowding in the mouth can make it challenging to adequately clean around every tooth, increasing the risk of infection, cavities, and tooth decay.
